Claret jug, hallmarked silver, made by J. G & S in London during the Victorian period, in about 1898 (photograph 1). The jug has a hallmarked silver pourer, lid and handle at the top, and a cut glass body (photograph 5). The lid opens using the thumb (photographs 2 to 4), and allows claret to be poured from a wine bottle into the jug using a funnel, or poured from the jug into various wine glasses. The hallmark on the neck of the jug is partially worn (photograph 7), and the bottom of the handle is not connected to the cut glass (photograph 6). However the jug is in reasonable condition for its age, and fully functional for its purpose of storing and pouring claret. The height of the claret jug is 26 cm, the length 12.5 cm, the width 11 cm, and weight 1.06 kg.
